If looks could kill, I’d have been on the chopping block when I walked into Dylan’s office with Eugene Haverty trailing behind me.

“What the—”

I held up my hand. “I’m fine. Everything’s fine,” I said as I brushed my hand across my belly. “Eugene has some information that may impact your investigation.”

He raised an eyebrow. “You know this how?”

“Because he came by the house as I was leaving.” Dylan’s face reddened. “Don’t worry. Everything’s okay. Just listen to what he has to say.”

Eugene repeated what he’d told me, and his story was practically identical, so I believed him.

Dylan took notes and quickly reviewed them. “Do you have any way to prove there were gold coins in the toolbox?”

“No, sir. I don’t. As I’ve said, I’ve searched through my Pa’s things but can’t find any paperwork or receipts.”

“Did Buck say why he didn’t go to the police?”

Eugene sighed. “He said the police are crooks and that he’d planned to take care of it himself.”

“Of course, he did,” I said. “Which is what could have gotten him killed.”

Eugene nodded. “That’s what I’m afraid happened.”

“We can easily find out where and how Henry purchased his car. That should clear this up right away.” He hit the speaker on his landline and called Matthew.

Matthew came in a few seconds later with a deputy. Dylan explained the situation, and the deputy got right on it.

“If we can’t prove the coins existed and who they belonged to, we can’t charge Henry with anything,” Dylan leveled with Eugene.

“But it does make him a suspect in Buck’s murder, right?” I prodded.

“We’ve arrested a suspect, Lily. Unless we have strong evidence that verifies Rodney didn’t kill Buck, evidence pointing to someone else, even with reasonable doubt, we have to move forward with the trial.”

I scowled. “Wouldn’t the coins be evidence enough to cast reasonable doubt?”

“Unless we have proof Buck had them, they’re just hearsay.”

“You know how this works.” He smiled at Eugene. “We’ll do everything we can to make sure your father’s killer is convicted.”

“Like your wife, I’m afraid you might be barking up the wrong tree.”

“Evidence suggests otherwise.”
